FAQ's About the Different Lights
1. Automobiles use 35 watt low beams and 55 watt high beams.
2. Most single engine Cessnas, Pipers, and other small airplanes use 100 watt landing and taxi lights
3. The first lights we built, used 100 watt landing lights that had a useful life of 300 hours. We consistently
got 600-700 hours of use out of them. They made the airplane a lot more visible but we wanted more.
4. The current kits we manufacture are going out the door with 250 watt lights. They are more than 5 times
brighter than the low beam lights on your truck or car. We are using the GE 4596 light which is rated at 25
hours of use but we are getting about 200 hours in the flashing mode. These lights are available for
$16-25 dollars depending on the supplier you get them from. (considerably cheaper than $125 for new
strobe light bulbs) Higher wattage or brighter lights have been tried but the heat generated clouds the
lens over in just a few hours.
5. LED's are now being offered as an option. The expected life of these lights is 40 to 50 thousand hours but
the current price is $600.00 per light.
6. HID lights are available but we don't recommend them because of cost and reliability.
7. The flasher is a 28 volt hybrid solid state/electro mechanical unit that is proving to be very reliable and
will work with any of the current lights offered. Hitek's Web Site
